For many coral reef fishes, reproductive life history includes the formation of fish spawning aggregations that are typically characterized as seasonal events that occur within one to several months of the year depending on species. Populations of large coral grouper, such as the squaretailed group Plectropomus areolatus (listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List), are rapidly declining in Solomon Islands due to targeted fishing at aggregation sites during spawning periods. WCS is working with local communities and the dive industry to set up management around important fish spawning aggregation sites and conduct routine monitoring of populations.
