In the sea, under the Solomon Islands National Ocean Policy, the government has committed to establishing a network of marine protected areas within the context of a national marine spatial plan spanning across its entire Exclusive Economic Zone. WCS is working closely with the government, private sector and local communities on the establishment of an offshore marine protected area within the Kavachi Seascape. We are also supporting the government on consultations for the national marine spatial plan.
On land, WCS is working with local partner Kolombangara Island Biodiversity Conservation Association to establish a national protected area over the upland forests of Kolombangara Island. These are intact forests covering sensitive montane habitat and a high diversity of range-restricted and endemic species.
